Levels
This year Hi-Fi is offering 4 levels of dance classes: Foundations, Intermediate I, Intermediate II, and Advanced. We are also offering “Meta” classes, which are not leveled and focus on dance-adjacent topics.
You get to choose which levels of classes you want to take and can choose classes in multiple skill levels. To help you self-select the level of class that is right for you, we have created some guidelines for what skills and experience is suggested in each level below.
All classes are 1 credit each. You received 4 class credits with the purchase of your Weekend Pass and additional class credits can be purchased through our registration platform.
Advanced classes will require an in-person audition held by instructors on Saturday morning before classes begin. If you wish to take advanced classes, you will register for them when class registration opens and add the Advanced Audition session as a free “class” to add it to your schedule. A few slots will be held in Intermediate II classes so that you can switch classes after auditions if needed. We will be publishing more info about the skills we are looking for in these auditions and what to expect at least a month before the event to give you time to prepare.

You are towards the beginning of your fusion journey and are excited to build a strong bedrock of knowledge centering musical understanding, body awareness, and key partnered movement techniques.
These classes will focus on adding ease, accuracy, and confidence to your dancing and will move at a slightly slower pace, with plenty of time for questions and reiteration of material.
Curriculum Goals:
Developing a deeper understanding of body mechanics and how to move from your core, use the floor, and reduce injury to self and partner
Increasing comfort dancing to a wider range of musical styles and tempos
Refining lead & follow mechanics to improve communication and reduce noise in partnership
Introducing some broad movement patterns from common base dances in Fusion
Growing comfort with traveling and dynamic movement while maintaining floor craft skills
Understanding 3-5 embrace frameworks and when & where to use them
We recommend this level for dancers who have started fusion dancing since the pandemic, are exclusively fusion dancers, or don't have access to consistent participation in a dance scene locally.
-
You are ready to launch your dance to the next level by expanding your movement vocabulary, combination techniques, and mode switching abilities.
These classes will introduce you to common patterns, musicality concepts, and aesthetics from other dance styles while focusing on integrating new material in a fusion container.
Curriculum Goals:Developing an understanding of your habitual movement patterns and begin exploring how to move beyond them
Increasing your familiarity & comfort with mode switching, defined as the ability to adopt distinct styling and rhythmic patterning from multiple dance styles and combine them in one dance
Refining your sensitivity to your partner and quality of connection
Expanding your vocabulary and techniques from various common base dances in Fusion
We recommend this level for dancers who have solid experience in at least one partnered dance style besides fusion, or who have been actively training their fusion dancing with techniques from specific styles for the last year or more.
-
You have been dancing for a while and are ready for a challenge. You want your learning experience at Hi-Fi to push you past the edges of what you know you can do into a new level of creativity and refinement.
These classes will take you deeper into techniques and movements from specific dances and some may require previous knowledge of certian dances or moves.
Curriculum Goals:Developing your ability to break out of your habitual movement patterns and consciously choose new options
Adding depth and subtlety to your mode switching
Refining your quality of movement, lines and shapes, and quality of connection
Expanding and tighten up your vocabulary and techniques as a fusion dancer
We recommend this level for dancers who have strong experience in 2+ partnered styles besides fusion, are excited about fast-paced class material, and have some kind of dedicated dance practice.
-
You have a rich understanding of 3+ partnered styles besides fusion and want to learn more complex and subtle ways to combine them. You know how to integrate new material into your own dancing and are excited to expand your ability to mode switch cleanly.
These classes focus on learning advanced concepts that tie multiple moves or techniques together and refining the clean execution of your foundational movements. Classes will be moving quickly, assuming you have an understanding of different rhythmic timestamps, and can quickly pick up footwork and patterns. Participating in this level requires attending an in-person audition on Saturday morning of the event.
Curriculum Goals:Developing your ability to consciously choose options while dancing that break you out of your habitual movement patterns
Understanding the common threads between dances and how to use that knowledge while dancing
Refining your basics, lines and shapes, and quality of movement
Experimenting, playing hard, failing, trying again!
-
Meta classes focus on dance-adjacent topics and skills, and are open to dancers of all levels.
We define "dance-adjacent" as themes that are relevant to our dance and scene, but do not necessarily include movement-based material. Themes like dance history, organizing skills, anti-racism & accessibility work, and more are covered in these classes.Curriculum Goals
Creating containers for important cultural conversations to be facilitated and engaged in by interested community members
Sharing resources, tools, and knowledge to assist the continued growth and evolution of the fusion scene
