Advanced class Auditions

High-Fidelity Fusion is passionate about creating fulfilling and inspirational learning containers for dancers at every stage of their educational journey. This year, we have designed an in-person audition process for participation in advanced level classes.

We are holding in-person auditions because they give judges the best opportunity to accurately assess dancers skill level and create a level playing field for everyone participating.

We know that auditions are not a common practice in the fusion scene and as such, have endeavored to bring as much transparency and equity to the process as possible.

When & Where:

Auditions will be held at 10am on Oct 5th in the Underground Ballroom.

Check-in will be open from 9:15-9:45am. Please check-in at the main registration desk to receive your audition number, as well as have your Saturday COVID test checked.

The ballroom will be available starting at 9:15am for warming up.

We highly encourage dancers to use the provided warm-up time to get out of their heads and into their bodies - get loose, be silly, be present.

Format:

Auditions will be Mix & Match style with all dancers assessed individually by a panel of 3 Hi-Fi instructors. Dancers must receive a yes from 2 judges in order to enter the advanced level.

Dancers will be divided into two groups by odd and even audition numbers.

Each group will dance a total of 4 rounds, with a new partner each round.

Rounds consist of two, 60-90 second songs of different genres. Once a group has danced two rounds, they will take a break while the other group auditions.

Once each group has danced two rounds, dancers who have received two “yeses” thus far will be announced, and asked to clear the floor. Then, each group dances for another 2 rounds. All remaining dancers will know their audition status by the end of the audition block at 9:45, and have 15 minutes to transition before the first classes of the day begin.

Judge feedback is not available at this time. If you wish to receive feedback on your audition, you may approach any judge and arrange a private lesson at their advertised rate.

If you signed up for advanced classes but do not get selected for this level, you will have time after the audition to re-register for classes. We are holding a number of spots open in all INT II classes to accommodate these shifts, and will have volunteers available on-site to help you in changing your registrations with ample time to get to the first classes of the day.

Judging Criteria:

Judges will be looking for high levels of proficiency in a minimum of 3 of the below 4 categories to accept dancers into the advanced level.

Musicality: The connection between the dancer & the music.

  • Is the dancer demonstrating skill through interesting movement choices?

  • Do these choices match the music?

Clarity of Movement: The clarity and intentionality of solo & partnered movement.

  • Are the dancers' movements precise?

  • Are the shapes & lines created in the dance visually interesting?

  • Is the dancer balanced as they move through various movements?

Mode Switching: The presence of multiple dance lineages in your fusion.

  • Are there identifiable elements of multiple foundational dances present?

  • Is their “dancer body” different in different dances with different people?

Partnered Connection: The connection between dance partners.

  • Is the dancer locked into their partner energetically?

  • Is there clarity in the connection or is there unnecessary noise?

  • Is the connection between partners responsive and conversational?

  • Are the movement choices that aren't strictly lead/following generative & adding to the connection?
